Singaporean Indian community angry at Halimah Yacob disavowing her Indian heritage

Discontentment has taken root among some Singaporean Indians over Halimah Yacob for disavowing her Indian heritage. The government-endorsed Presidential candidate is an Indian by birth as a child always follows her father’s race when it comes to mix marriage.

Halimah Yacob however refuse to acknowledge that she is Indian, and insisted that she is Malay. The treacherous behaviour is frowned upon not only by the Singaporean Indian community, but also the Malay and Chinese communities who place filial piety as basic values worthy of a Singapore President.

Due to stringent media censorship, the grouses from the ground are covered up and not allowed to see light. According to several Singaporean Indian and mix-blood Singaporeans States Times Review spoke to on conditions of anonymity, most agreed that Halimah Yacob should come clean about her heritage.

One mix-blood Indian Muslim Singaporean whose father is Indian and mother is Malay, like Halimah Yacob, said that he was denied assistance from the Malay help group, Mendaki, because he is not Malay. The Singaporean was told to approach the Indian help group, Sinda, which gladly helped him tide over the difficult period. The Singaporean Indian-Muslim told States Times Review: “After my personal experience, I think Halimah Yacob is shameful to reject (her Indian heritage). She want to be Malay that is her problem but why must she deny her Indian heritage?”

A Malay Singaporean told States Times Review that he is reluctant to vote for her even though he voted for her in his constituency. He said:

“First, the government call for a Malay election. Okay fine I accept you shift the goalpost. But you put up an Indian to be Malay President? Hello this is a foul goal.”

Singapore’s coming Presidential Election is a racist one reserved for only the Malay race, after dictator Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong re-wrote the country’s Constitution to prevent Dr Tan Cheng Bock from contesting.
